Gregg Gelb, D.M.A is a saxophonist, clarinetist, band leader, arranger, composer and educator. He is director of the Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble, founder and director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Society, and co-founder and player with the North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra. He also leads his Jazz Quartet, La Fiesta Latin Jazz Band, the Second Line Stompers, and Gregg Gelb Swing Band. He plays often with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. Gelb was given the Raleigh Medal of Arts in 2018. Gelb is a recipient of a Jazz Composers Award from the North Carolina Arts Council.

Michael Shekwoaga Ode is an Nigerian-american drummer, composer, and educator. A student of Music and Drum Icon Billy Hart, Ode has been blessed to tour, record, play, and study with some of the most iconic and innovative artists in the history of music. Michael is now living in NYC playing around the city with his various ensembles, as a sideman, and touring internationally with his own projects and some of the most influential musical voices of our times.

The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble (TYJE) is part of the Philharmonic Association based in Raleigh, which has grown since 1988 to include three jazz big bands, one jazz lab, three full symphonic orchestras, two string orchestras, and several chamber ensembles, serving 500 young musicians a year. TYJE is a community ensemble for advanced jazz musicians in grades 8 – 12. The students come from the Greater Raleigh, NC region and meet once a week.

TYJE is the first and only North Carolina group to have been selected for the finals of Essentially Ellington. In their first year at the finals in 2016 TYJE earned second place. TYJE has also been a finalist in 2017, 2018, 2019,2020, 2022 and again in 2023. Recent TYJE performances have been for First Night Raleigh, NC Museum of History, Cary Arts Center, Apex Peakfest, the Duck (NC) Jazz Festival and the Halle Cultural Center. TYJE’s director and conductor Dr. Gregg Gelb, saxophonist and clarinettist, was recently awarded the City of Raleigh Medal of Arts, the city’s highest arts honor, given for extraordinary achievement in the practice or support of local arts.
